STATEMENT OF SCHOLARSHIP

I. Mission of the Department of Management's Scholarship and Research

The Department of Management is committed to excellence in research and scholarship. Its mission is to develop knowledge in those disciplines represented by the department and disseminate it to professional colleagues in these fields, to practitioners who use that knowledge and to students who will bring that knowledge into their future careers.

II. Scholarship Agenda and Initiative

As a department dedicated to both the development and application of knowledge, it views scholarly pursuits in a very broad sense and as an inherent part of all activities. Clearly the criteria of scholarly quality research are built into the research work itself. However, the members of the department also stress the importance of maintaining the highest standards of quality in bringing expertise and knowledge to bear in all their activities, including service to the University and consultation to those served outside the University. Therefore, the standards for evaluating scholarly efforts are applied not just to the more traditional areas of journal publication, which the department strongly emphasizes, but to a very broad range of faculty pursuits that also reflect the quality of the individual's work.

As an essential part of its research agenda the department encourages and rewards collaborative efforts among the faculty, especially between the two disciplines, organizational behavior and strategic management. The complexity of today's organizations demands a diversity of viewpoints as a means of analyzing and solving many of their problems. Research that joins different perspectives offers a powerful approach to developing concepts and models that can meet the challenges of these complex issues.

III. Areas of Scholarly Contribution

Since the department recognizes the importance of both theory and practice, it gives equal weight to specific activities in both contexts. With respect to the former, recognition is given to theory development, hypothesis testing, integration and advancement of existing concepts, and state-of-the-art evaluations of knowledge in the field. Regarding the latter, emphasis is given to direct application of concepts and models to real-life problems, contributions to the advancement of technologies and assessments of the impact of interventions derived from theory.

IV. Vehicles for the Dissemination of Knowledge

Given the broad and inclusive definition of scholarship in the department, the range of outlets for the dissemination of knowledge is equally broad and includes publications intended for specific academic audiences as well as vehicles that reach practicing managers. Since the commitment is to reach those audiences through whatever publications are appropriate, the department does not rate the publications as necessarily higher or lower in status relative to each other. However, it must be noted that certain journals in each of the disciplines are recognized as representing the highest standards of academic excellence, and that publication of articles in these journals reflects outstanding achievement on the part of the author(s). These journals are listed in a later section referring to "quality refereed journals." The quality judgment in any case is based upon the standards of acceptance of articles by the publication, the esteem in which its readers hold that publication and the ultimate effectiveness of it in reaching the audiences sought by the contributor. Consequently, the outlets for scholarly work of the department, arranged in order of scholarly value, include:

  1. - traditional refereed (peer reviewed) research journals
    - refereed journals devoted to application of research
    - books that advance the state of knowledge
    - journals devoted to teaching methodology
  2. - publications intended for practicing managers and executives
  3. - published proceedings from professional meetings
    - presentations at professional meetings
  4. - journals devoted to case studies
    - books that effectively disseminate knowledge in the field
    - published articles in popular outlets that bring recognition
to the contributor for quality scholarly work
  5. - published reviews of books or articles that contribute to the advancement of knowledge
  6. - documents and reports related to studies conducted for outside agencies or companies

Although we look for a balance among the categories listed above, we still place a strong emphasis on publication in peer reviewed journals.
