Financial Aid for Graduate Programs in Econonmics
Financial Aid Rules and Regulations, Petitions and Appeals
Merit Based Aid:
Several forms of financial assistance are available to graduate students through the Graduate School and the department, most of which are awarded for an academic year commencing in September. The application for admission also serves as new students’ application for scholarship and assistantship aid awarded by the department. Continuing graduate students may apply for merit based awards, including an upgrade or change in the type of award. An application for a change in award must be made in writing to the Graduate Programs Coordinator.
Scholarships
a) Full-Time Students: Students who will be enrolled full time (9 or more credits) may be granted academic year or semester tuition scholarships. These awards provide for waiver of tuition and are subject to the maintenance of a high scholastic record in the Graduate School.
b) Part-Time Students: Students who will be enrolled part time (less than 9 credits) may be granted part-time tuition scholarships. These awards provide a waiver of tuition charges and are awarded each semester of the academic year. Application forms are available at the Graduate School (deadlines are early November and early April).
Assistantships
The Department awards teaching and research assistantships to students. Assistantships are awarded to the best qualified entering and continuing students. Assistantship awards for entering students are based upon application materials, including record of prior academic performance, GRE scores, letters of recommendation and other indicators of academic and professional promise. Awards are renewed for continuing students based upon performance in the first year of the M.A. or Ph.D. program and upon the quality of service rendered as a graduate assistant. For M.A. students, assistantships are not granted for more than one year. Further inquiries on assistantships should be addressed to the graduate program coordinator.
An appointment may be renewed provided that funds are available and that the student's academic performance, as well as her performance in carrying out the responsibilities of her assistantship, is satisfactory. Students are normally involved in assistantship activities for twenty hours a week for full assistantships and ten hours a week for half assistantships, which may involve teaching and research. Grounds for revoking an assistantship held by a continuing student include, but are not limited to, the following: unsatisfactory performance as a graduate assistant, receipt of a failing grade (below B-) in one or more courses in the graduate program, or receipt of grades below B+ in fifty percent or more of the courses in the graduate program. Decisions to revoke an assistantship will be made by the faculty in coordination with the Admissions and Financial Aid Committee.
Need-Based Aid
Limited amounts of need-based aid from federal and state sources are available through the Financial Aid Office for U.S. citizens. The national Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) should be submitted to the College Scholarship Service in Princeton, New Jersey, as soon as possible after January 1, but prior to February 15, for priority consideration for fall semester. For further information or to request an FAFSA form, contact the Financial Aid Office in Stoke Hall. Telephone: (603) 862-3600. Perkins Loans, College Work Study, UNH Loans, Stafford Loans, and Veteran's Benefits are all discussed in detail in the Graduate Catalog.
New England Regional Student Program
Admitted graduate students who are legal residents of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, or Vermont may be eligible for reduced tuition (NH resident tuition plus fifty percent) if the Economics program to which they are admitted is not available at a public institution in their home state. Applicants who believe they qualify under the New England Regional Student Program should request further information from the graduate program coordinator.
Summer School Tuition Waivers
Students who have served as teaching assistants during the regular academic year are eligible for tuition waivers for courses taken during the summer school sessions immediately following their teaching assistant appointments.
