"With the rapid globalization of business activities, increasing numbers of firms have developed strategies to expand their operations into foreign markets. This study investigated the factors that comprise multinational companies' (MNCs) decisions to operate in foreign markets in one of four entry modes---exporting, licensing/franchising, joint ventures, and wholly owned subsidiaries---with a view toward predicting performance.

This dissertation fills important gaps in the literatures on replication, knowledge transfer, and the Resource Based View by extending our understanding of the dynamics of replication in three ways. First, it empirically tests the fundamental replication hypothesis that the use of a template in the replication process increases the effectiveness of the transfer.

"Franchise value and competition provide contrary risk-taking incentives to firms. High franchise value constrains risk-taking while competition generally induces risk-taking. Existing empirical evidence on these relationships, however, has been mixed, motivating us to reexamine these issues. This study adds to the literature by considering the influence of franchise value and competition on insurer risk-taking strategies simultaneously and accounting for the interaction effect between franchise value and competition.

"The purpose of this study is to compare the sales growth, profit growth, and return on investment (ROI) of the Thai franchise system with the international franchise system in Thailand. Since there is little empirical research on franchise performance in foreign countries and none in any Asian countries, this study will expand franchise knowledge in the field of internationalization (Elango & Fried, 1997). Franchise theory is based on capital market imperfection thesis, the information asymmetry hypothesis, the agency theory, and international franchising.
